Hines Ward's Complaints Make No Sense

Hines, your tears sustain me.
Recently, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward spoke out against the NFL and their stance on player safety, calling the league "hypocrites". He said:
"The league doesn't care about us anyway. They don't care about the safety of the game. If the league was so concerned about the safety, why are you adding two more games on? You talk about you don't want players to drink ... and all you see is beer commercials. You don't want us to gamble, but then there are [NFL-endorsed lottery scratch-off games]... It's going to change the outcome; somebody's going to lose a game because of it,"
Let's dissect his complaints.
"The league doesn't care about us anyway. They don't care about the safety of the game."
Believe it or not, it really is in the league's best interest to keep players healthy. When a player gets injured, someone has to take their spot. Usually, that injured player is going to be replaced by a less skilled, less popular backup. This is diluting the product the NFL is trying to market.

But no, Hines, the NFL isn't fighting for your rights. That's the NFLPA's job. As far as jobs that involve running as fast as you can and hurling your body at other people are concerned, the NFL is amongst the safest. The NFL cares about its employees as much as any other business does.
"If the league was so concerned about the safety, why are you adding two more games on?"
The NFL is attempting to lower the chances of getting hurt on a given play. Adding two games to the schedule doesn't increase the inherent risks in playing football, it simply increases the number of opportunities to be injured.

Will it shorten careers, impacting a player's ability to earn over the course of their lifetime? Let's ignore the fact that player salaries will increase if an 18 game schedule is implemented. I can't see how playing 144 games in just 8 seasons is any more of a toll on the body than 144 games over the course of 9 seasons.
"You talk about you don't want players to drink, but our major endorsement is Coors Light. That's all you see is beer commercials."
No, no, no, Hines. The NFL doesn't want its players to drink and drive or drink and assault a cab driver or drink and shoot yourself in the leg. HUGE difference. You can drink until your liver cries uncle. For the most part, the "high standards" players are held to by the NFL consist of not breaking the law.

I know what you're thinking. "That's not fair! Why should NFL players have to obey the same laws as ordinary citizens?" The world may never know. However, even when players do break the law, when was the last time a player was banned from the NFL?

Truth be told, the NFL is pretty forgiving when it comes to players and their legal troubles. Just ask Pacman Jones, Michael Vick, Larry Johnson, Donte Stallworth, and Santonio Holmes, amongst others.
"It's going to change the outcome; somebody's going to lose a game because of it."
It wouldn't be the first or last time the outcome of a game would be affected by officiating. Anytime a human being is charged with making a decision, that decision is subject to human error.

Maybe the NFL should get rid of pass interference and holding, because those are often controversial calls? No, wait, that's idiotic. The game is changing, and players should probably get used to it.

A few people have praised Hines Ward for standing up and speaking his mind against the league. Why doesn't someone with the Steelers stand up and teach teammate James Harrison how to tackle without leading with his helmet? Because that's what this is all about, isn't it?

Hines is a lying cry baby.
He was just complaining about the refs taking him out of plays after he got his head smashed in.
He also said he was going to play hurt and not tell anybody so they wouldnt take him out.
Hypocrite ?

People are unreal! hines ward is one of the greatest football players of his time. He is speaking from the heart. Just watch the sports talk shows and they all agree with him. The NFL is ruining the game and it appears they have a red flag on Harrison's back. Get over it people. he is right on the money.

You can have "Flash and Dash" football. High scores, lame end zone antics. Get a buncha track runners and ballerinas to play.

I'll take "Crash and Smash" football. Put it on the line. Give a hit, take a hit, last man standing. That is football.

I love that in the same breath, Hines bitches about the league not doing enough to protect players and then also bitches about the negative effects on the game of rules that are intended to, uh, PROTECT THE PLAYERS.

I also love that the Steelers mutants roll in right on cue with the canned OMG THEY IZ TURNIN FUTBOL INTO BALLET response.

Keep pissing them off, it's getting you readership!

You know I have been watching football for a very long time. My sister and I (yes I too am a female) love to watch for the great hits of the game. With this new ruling from on high and the helmet to helmet hits being fined. We do not want to watch a NFL game that is being watered down. We don't want to watch a namby pamby football game were the players are afraid to tackle anyone.

As Steelers fans we are use to seeing hard hitting players take the field. I remember the great players from the 1970s on all the teams.

So you can soak your head about Ward being wrong.

Nice. Steelers suck and there is finally a commissioner that isn't going to coddle the Steelers as the "golden team" of the NFL.

Reality sucks and Goodell is laying the law down on the leagues dirtiest team , Hines Ward is there leader.

If I want to watch a "powder puff" type of sport I'd watch GOLF...OMG How boring...!! Come on now, man up and play the game like it is meant to be played. Let's compare other sports: Boxing & Cage Fighting, they get their faces busted open. Head concussions, (are they gonna start wearing helmets and pads under their clothes)? Ice Hockey, they can be brutal at times...are we gonna take their hard sticks and replace them with Foam style sticks? Female Roller derby, they hit and knock each other around all the time. Those games are played the way they were meant to be played. Same as Golf..played like it is meant to be played..(easy and slow and old man's sport..lol) I'll watch that if I want to see a low action sport! Everyone chooses their careers knowing full well what that entails. Same with other occupations such as a Firefighter, Police Officers, Military Personnel etc. I sure hope they don't go "soft" & and only protect us if it's "safe" for them to do so..Our lives depends on them being Tough and ready to do their Job...! If the Football player can't do the job take the hits he needs to pick a different Career...(maybe golf) Come on "man up" Play football as it's intended to be played. I think Goodell needs replaced with a real man. And the Steelers play football as "real Men" should play the game...any man that thinks otherwise must be a "shemale" lol Give him a skirt and heels! Whimp! too funny! And this is from a females point of view...I Love my team and men tough! Not a "shemale" lol

James Harrison is a dirty player, put on the tape and you'll see. Instead of fining him, make him play with a leather helmet. That way next time he leads with his head, he comes up talking like George Foreman and selling grills. Maybe he can get V8 to sponsor a vegetable

Taking a moment from my delicious raven stew just to say "IN YOUR FACE!" to you, all the haters, to john Harbaugh and his smug pre game comments, To the NFL and the lousy officiating. Hypocrites indeed, you showed your true colors... Green with envy. Steeler Nation > NFL.

I can see that some hits are dangerous but then so is driving a car. It is stupid to fine someone for doing what they get paid to do.When you hit someone in the face and break their nose ( you don't even get a yellow flag )how can that be any less dangerous than a helmet to helmet hit
